How To Pick The Right Chew For Your Dog

Chews and chew toys are a great way to stimulate your dog mentally, to keep them from chewing all the wrong things and to clean their teeth. They also help strengthen their jaws and it helps puppies alleviate teething pain. Before you go chew toy/ snack shopping, it’s important to know their chew-type. Which one of these best describes your dog?

  • GULPER: Now you see it, now you don’t! This type bites off large chunks of edible chews and swallows them fast. Nothing lasts very long with the Gulper.
  • DESTROYER: These are the dogs that try to (and often succeed in) thoroughly destroying whatever they get their mouths on making a big mess.
  • NIBBLER: These dogs are connoisseurs. They take their time and savor their chews and toys slowly, giving them the respect and attention they deserve.

Hard Chews (Gulpers & Nibblers)

Reindeer Antlers, Duvo Smoked Bone, Loving Pets Horn

These chews are durable and meant to last a very long time. If your dog is a heavy biter, better stay away as chewing on something hard might damage their teeth.

Edible Chews (Nibblers, Gulpers and Destroyers)

Smart Bones Skin and Coat, Calming, Hip&Joint, Double Chicken Rolls
Smart Bones Dental, Bacon and Cheese, Real Beef
Smart Bones Grain Free, Peanut Butter, Sweet Potato

Smart Bones are a chewy, veggie-based treat. Chewy outside and filled with meat, poultry or peanut butter on the inside they can be easily digested unlike rawhide. You should however supervise your pup chewing them as especially gulpers could swallow big pieces and potentially choke.

Nylon Chews (Destroyers, Gulpers and Nibblers)

Tasty Bone Beef, Turkey and Cranberry & Tasty Bone Dental

Made from 100% virgin nylon, this chew is guaranteed to last. Infused with irresistible flavors the “Tasty Bones” promote your furry ones oral hygiene. Just make sure you buy a big enough one.

Chew Toys (Destroyers & Gulpers)

Duvo Treat Toy, Ferbiella Fuxtreme, Trixie Fillable Toy

For Gulpers and Destroyers the best choice is durable, big-sized toys that can be filled with peanut butter or treats. You can put them in the freezer to make it last even longer.

Generally it’s best to give your dog chews under supervision and if you have several dogs that might fight over a chew, better separate them. If your dog shows any signs of distress after eating a chew or you think they swallowed something they shouldn’t, please go see your vet immediately.
