Treats are an effective training tool and a great way to tell your dog “well done” in terms they can clearly understand. But just like with dry food, dog owners should be careful about the ingredients found in dog treats. They are less regulated than food and often contain sugar and numerous doubtful additives. It is recommended for dogs to only eat 10% of their daily food intake in treats but let’s be honest- we dog lovers love to spoil our pets. And while it is indeed important to keep an eye on the amount of treats you feed (you don’t want your dog to be obese), we have good news for you and your furry ones: Lebanon has two paw-licious, healthy & homemade dog treat brands. As we added them to our online shop recently, we’d like to introduce them to you:
Alice in treatland
This remarkable brand’s journey started with dog lover Shady Timsah and his rescued dog Alice, who was struggling with allergies to about every commercial dog food out there. When her owner switched her from store food to homemade food her health improved immensely and Shady went on a quest: He wanted to create dog treats that are not only tasty but also a remedy, improving the dogs overall health, helping overcome stomach issues, allergies and lethargy.
After a lot of research, he created Alice in Treatland, a brand for delicious homemade treats that immediately stood out due to its creative name and artistic package design. Fun fact: There is actually Alice’s paw on the package. But what matters the most is what’s inside and that is super delicious:
The Nutty Papples are vegan and contain two healthy homemade ingredients: peanut butter and pumpkin puree. Peanut Butter is full of heart-healthy fats as well as vitamin B, vitamin B3 and vitamin E. Together with the homemade Pumpkin Puree, which is loaded with fiber and beta-carotin, it helps your dog deal with diarrhea as well as constipation, while generally benefiting your dog’s brain, metabolism, and nervous system. Flaxseeds help dogs maintain a shiny and healthy coat while apples freshen their breath. They make a good, healthy snack not only for your dog but for you as well and you can store them for up to one year.
The jerkies are infused with coconut oil and rosemary, acting as a natural preservative. Their shelf life is three months but if stored in a cool and dry place they can last up to 7 months. Shady assured us, that when making the treats, he tries every badge, even before Alice, to make sure their quality is superb.
Vet Dr. Myra Tabet, following a holistic approach with a focus on pet nutrition, can tell from many experiences with her furry patients what strong effects a dog’s diet has on their overall health.
She explained that, during a dog’s life, their body endures a lot of chemicals: some for their own protection (vaccines), some because of the conditions we live in (fumes and pollution) but most of them because of what they eat. Many commercial dog foods contain toxins that impair dog’s livers and kidneys, lead to allergies and long-term weaknesses.
Dr. Tabets dog, Kayla, was suffering from an autoimmune disease with allergic symptoms, forcing her to switch to a homemade organic diet. When seeing the rapid improvements caused by the change, Dr. Tabet decided to take on the challenge of making treats from scratch! They were so delicious that her friends’ dogs couldn’t get enough of it, making her wonder: “Why not make them available for everyone?”. Together with her partner Fouad Tueni, and after trying out different flavors, giving out samples, and testing their treats on even the pickiest dogs, they decided that they are ready to go in “production” and start selling their home-made treats beginning this month. In order to not harm the environment, even their packaging is made from bio-degradable materials.
“Pawesome Organic” is available in two yummy flavors that are 100% Organic and so full of goodness, that you can even share them with your pup. There are Chicken flavored treats, as well as vegan Peanut Butter & Banana treats, with supreme organic ingredients like homemade peanut butter, organic bananas , organic coconut oil, free range chicken and eggs from Biomass as well as honey from the Shouf. While Bananas and honey seem to be an unusual ingredient in dog treats, they are, if used moderately, actually superfoods for your dog: Bananas contain potassium, manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, fiber, biotin, and copper, helping your dogs metabolism and honey, if local and high quality, serves as a natural remedy for your pups allergies.
Because of their freshness and lack of any preservatives, Pawesome Organic treats don’t last as long as commercial treats (chicken 5-6 weeks, Banana- Peanut butter 2-4 weeks) but for sure your furry one (or you!) will devour them in no time.
Another flavor, beef, is planned in the near future, as well as treats for cats. Also, for anyone who desires to switch their furry companion to an organic home made diet but lacks the time to prepare it, Myra offers to cook a customized diet that fits each individual dog’s needs.
